The creative conversations that museum objects can inspire is the idea behind the Creative Sparks event at Tauranga’s Escape! festival on Sunday, June 3.

Organisers invited five local people to chose an object from the 30,000 stored at a Tauranga City Council facility, home to the heritage collection since the last museum closed in 1998. The resulting stories, songs and historical narratives will be heard for the first time at 4pm at Baycourt on June 3.

The event features physicist, musician and surfer Dr Simon Taylor; children’s author and drama teacher Angie Belcher; artist and collector of stories from Tauranga Moana Que Bidois; singer-songwriter Marion Arts; and journalist and Shakespearian actor David Tauranga.

All five have been delighted with the object they’ve chosen as it’s opened a window into Tauranga’s past, and are looking forward to sharing the results of their collaboration. They, and Tauranga Arts Festival, would like to thank Fiona Kean, curator of the Tauranga Heritage collection, and Dean Flavell, Tauranga City Council’s manager of cultural heritage, for their support and help with Creative Sparks.
