Sharing Knowledge is power

‘Power’ used to be in having knowledge (and holding it), now it is about sharing knowledge. With the increasing use of social media, social marketing and interaction with business and community alike, we are in the age of knowledge sharing. We all know technology is changing at a rapid rate and with the advancements of knowledge sharing, this is not going to slow down.  It is not just human sharing but also machine to machine sharing knowledge.  Machines that can repair itself and machines that can analyse data from another machine to order the milk that is no longer in your fridge are transforming the home, let alone businesses!

New Zealand is strongly based on an agricultural economy, so imagine for a moment what would happen when the beef and milk we consume is made in a lab.  Farming and land is not required, transportation of goods is no longer needed and the international consumer doesn’t know any different!

Learning something online for career advancement or a totally new one is becoming easier.  Security and privacy requirements are tighter and knowledge of these trends is becoming more of a requirement. Make sure you have the right systems, governance, people, and knowledge in place to assist you to do what you want to do.

Bob Dylan once said, ““A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night, and in between he does what he wants to do.” make sure you do what you want to do, and get assistance for things that you don’t!

 

 

The human-technology divide?

Increasingly as an outsource technology department Stratus Blue is finding technology becoming the third element in business partnering and advisory services.  As well as technology support, technology leadership sits beside accounting and legal for outsource advice for most SMEs, and having a department that can assist with internal teams without the overhead cost, simply pays!

The use of effective technology and human interaction with technology is important for the modern business.  This is where correct policies, procedures and culture come into play.  You could have the best technology in the business but if the culture or governance is not right from the top, people may misuse or not adopt the right technology for the right reasons.  A customer had a tight “no social media” policy but a security and internet traffic review revealed that 71% of internet traffic was via social media at work!   The policy and the culture didn’t align so some changes had to be made to technology and people to improve productivity and focus what the business was good at, not worry about IT or technology!  Culture, Governance and technology use are not necessarily mutually exclusive.  Make sure they all get along so you and your teams can do what you do best!
