Finding a balance between retaining the lovely character of the Omokoroa Domain and foreshore while making sure the area caters for growth and multiple use, was the theme of a recent workshop held by Western Bay of Plenty District Council and community representatives.
Sixteen community representatives met with Council staff, facilitator Megan Thorn and design consultants Boffa Miskell, to discuss options for the future development of the domain, boat ramp and esplanade.
Initial draft design elements that were presented at the workshop were:
- A one-way spine road through the domain to stop vehicles ‘bunching’ at the point
- Adding car parks along the spine road and on access roads
- Upgrading / expanding the boat ramp Upgrading the picnic and barbeque area, toilets and playground facilities and providing safe walkways within the reserve.
Key messages from the workshop included:
- Keeping the green space and lovely trees and the character of the Esplanade
- Finding a long term parking solution for Matakana ferry users
- Ensuring safety of children if a spine road is installed, by making it a pedestrian friendly ‘shared space’
- Upgrading the boat ramp to a two-lane facility
- Making the pontoon area safer for swimmers
- Managing drainage so the Domain is drier in winter
- Adding clear signage for users
- Potential seasonal restrictions, or relocation of freedom campers

Public open days will be held in July to present the feedback and design options resulting from this workshop.
The community will also be able to submit their thoughts and provide input about the draft design.
Council is keen to work with the community to balance how best to retain the look and feel of the area while also providing for the current and future activities that makes the domain and foreshore area a special place.
A project budget of $780,000 over the next three years (2018-2021) will be used to put the plan into action. Council hopes to adopt the final plan in September 2018 and begin work this financial year.
